Melbourne Cricket Club confirm interest in bidding for IPL team

The MCC have confirmed reports claiming they have been looking at the possibilities of joining a consortium interested in buying one of two new Indian Premier League franchises.

MCC chief executive Keith Bradshaw and club trustee Anthony Wreford spent the weekend in India holding talks with a group of investors who are interested in owning an IPL franchise.

The MCC are the guardians of the laws and spirit of cricket and the move to own an IPL franchise would be a radical change of direction for its members.

“MCC has a proud history, is respectful of the game's traditions and always mindful of its role as guardian of the laws and spirit of cricket," said Bradshaw.

"We would not pursue a path that we believed was contrary to the best interests of the sport or to the future health of Test match cricket” he added.

"Undeniably, the game is changing. MCC, as an innovative, independent cricket club, wants to be at the heart of that change.”

"The concept of MCC involvement in the IPL is something I believe is worthy of thorough investigation, and something that we'll take to our committee for their deliberation."

IPL security- Progress made???

Despite a scathing attack by IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi on Australia’s cricketers the Australian Cricketers Association has claimed progress is being made over security issues.

"Our security adviser Reg Dickason has been working with the IPL's security adviser, Nicholls-Steyn. They've been working for a few days now on what we've identified as the issues that have come out of various player meetings" ACA chief executive Paul Marsh told 'Cricinfo'.

"Nicholls-Steyn is aware of those and they are working through the issues and we're making some positive progress" he added.

"It's probably looked more positive over the last few days than what it has (before). There's still 15 days to go before the event starts and things can happen very quickly in India, we've seen that over the years".

Australia’s top IPL players had told the Australian Cricketers' Association about their concerns for their safety in India after the bombings in Pune last week during a meeting held in Sydney.

Ponting-Warne clash on IPL scurity issue

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has clashed with Aussie legend Shane Warne over the safety of Australia’s players during next months Indian Premier League.

Ponting’s war of words with Warne and other former Aussie test players came during a meeting of the Australian Cricketers' Association in Sydney were the topic of player safety in India was discussed.

According to 'The Australian' newspaper Ponting and other centrally contracted players are concerned about traveling to India but the likes of Warne, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden are happy with the safety arrangements.

"There is a split among the freelance former Test cricketers who want to attend and Cricket Australia-contracted players who want everybody to work as one on the issue".

"It is understood the past players, including Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist clashed with captain Ricky Ponting during the meeting" said a news story in the 'The Australian'.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has also waded into the row via twitter suggesting Ponting was pressuring his fellow players not to come to India because he was dropped by the Kolkata Knight Riders during the winter.

After the meeting which was held in Sydney between the ACA and the Australian players contracted to play in India ACA chief executive Paul Marsh confirmed he will give a list of demands to the IPL over player safety.

"From the outset it is important to reinforce that players want to play in this year's IPL, however the independent report has identified some serious concerns with aspects of the current security process" said Marsh.

"Specifically these concerns relate to the reported direct threat against the event and the status and implementation of the IPL's security plan." he added.

"The process from here is for all players associated to meet with their player groups and for all of us to feedback the concerns raised from these meetings to the IPL."

"This will be coordinated through our peak body the Federation for International Cricketers' Association (FICA). From here we will await a response from the IPL."

Tendulkar- Polite reaction as always

Sachin Tendulkar, who broke the record for the highest individual ODI score, overtaking Saeed Anwar and Charles Coventry on his way to the format's first double-hundred, has said his ability to bat the entire 50 overs was a testament to his fitness after having played the game for more than 20 years.
"It feels good that I lasted for 50 overs, a good test of my fitness. I'd like to bat another 50 overs at some stage and see that the fitness level doesn't drop," Tendulkar said after his effort helped India take a unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. "The ball was coming onto the bat and I was striking the ball well. So when everything falls into its place, it feels nice. It was one of the innings where I felt I was moving well. Since I was timing the ball well, I could be more aggressive and put pressure on the bowlers."
Tendulkar, while dedicating his feat to the people of India, credited coach Gary Kirsten for the team's success in both forms of the game after the debacle in the World Cup in the Caribbean. "I've enjoyed various challenges; after the 2007 World Cup things have looked different and I'm enjoying the game," he said. "The credit also goes to Gary [Kirsten], he has really held the team beautifully. It's about togetherness and playing for each other. You see during the practice sessions that Gary himself trains as hard as anyone else, or probably harder than anyone else as he's the one giving us practice all the time."
Tendulkar said he sensed an opportunity to break the record and reach a double-century when he had gone past 175 in the 42nd over. The record eventually came in the 46th over, and the 200 in the 50th. "When I was near 175-180, I thought I could get a 200 as there were quite a few overs left," he said. He added that he would prefer his achievement to be upstaged by an Indian. "I don't play for records, I play for enjoyment and play with lots of passion. That's how cricket started. I didn't start playing cricket to break all the records; it's happened along the way. The dream was to play for India and do my best.
"I don't think any record is unbreakable. Records are made to be broken. I hope that if this record is broken, it's done by an Indian."
This was India's third-highest score in ODIs, and Tendulkar said the 400-mark would not have reached if not for some big hitting by Yusuf Pathan and MS Dhoni. "I thought a target of 340-350 would be a good one, but Yusuf Pathan and MS Dhoni came in and hit the big shots and cleared the ropes consistently and helped us pass 400."
Tendulkar added that India were not relaxing despite having put up a mammoth score, for they were aware South Africa were the only team to have chased down a target in excess of 400. "This was the team that chased 434 against Australia. So we didn't get complacent and told ourselves that we had just got through the half-way stage by scoring 401. And what we did in the second half was extremely important. We were aiming at getting early wickets and putting them out of the game."
Dhoni, who witnessed Tendulkar surpass the record from the other end, said: "I think one of the best innings, you can say. It's always good to be on the other side, watching him score 200 runs. When he is tired and can't play the big shots, he was very clever to use the pace of the bowler and it's very difficult for the bowlers as they don't know where exactly to bowl."
India lost Virender Sehwag early, and Tendulkar was assisted in three sizable stands where runs came at a brisk pace, with Dinesh Karthik, Yusuf and Dhoni. "Once Viru got out, it was important to get some kind of a partnership going. They [Tendulkar and Karthik] went on with their innings, and they set a platform after which we were sure we would get 350-plus which would be a difficult target," Dhoni said. "Yusuf was sent up the order and with the talent he's got, he can be a great asset to the side."
Yusuf scored a quickfire 36 and was particularly lethal during the batting Powerplay, while Dhoni proved destructive at the death, bludgeoning 68 off 35 in a century-stand with Tendulkar in just 53 balls. "I have changed my batting a bit, but the situation demanded that kind [attacking] of innings," Dhoni said. "The ground is a small one, and we were a bit worried about the dew factor. But once they lost 3-4 early wickets, it was difficult for them to get back into the game."
For South Africa and their stand-in captain Jacques Kallis, it was a case of the basics gone wrong. "The toss was quite vital. Our basics were just weren't good enough today. We were outplayed," Kallis said. "We lost wickets at crucial stages, our basics let us down. A fantastic innings by Sachin; he took advantage of some good conditions and he played superbly. We let ourselves down in some areas."

Sachin Tendulkar's 200 breaks ODI world record as India crush South Africa

Sachin Tendulkar smashed a record-breaking double century as India scored an emphatic 153-run victory over South Africa in the second one-day international at Gawalior, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Tendulkar hit an unbeaten 200, the first ever double century in ODIs, and built partnerships with Dinesh Karthik (79), Yusuf Pathan (36) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (68) as India finished with a mammoth total of 401 for three.
South Africa stuttered with their reply and although AB de Villiers made a brave 114, the visitors were bowled out for 248 in 42.5 overs.

India, with Tendulkar at the forefront, were merciless with the bat, despite the early loss of Virender Sehwag (nine), as they made the most of Dhoni's rare success with the toss.
Sehwag, pronounced fit only hours before the start following a back injury sustained in the previous game in Jaipur, was caught at third man off Wayne Parnell, but South Africa thereafter were battered into submission on a placid surface.
Tendulkar, who had lashed Parnell for boundaries on either side of the wicket for his first runs, unleashed an onslaught from which South Africa never recovered.
The master batsman brought a dazzling array of strokes into play as he smashed South Africa's bowlers around the park en route to a 37-delivery half-century.
He slowed down a bit as he neared his 46th ODI century, but once past the mark, he again opened up, smashing Jacques Kallis for three boundaries in one over.
Karthik, who had come in at the fall of Sehwag's wicket, had played the supporting role admirably as he went on to achieve to his fourth ODI half-century.
The pair added 194 for the second wicket when Parnell struck again, luring Karthik into a pull which the batsman mistimed, hitting straight to Herschelle Gibbs at mid-wicket.
There was little respite for South Africa, however, as Pathan smashed four boundaries and two sixes in a brief stay, while adding 81 for the third wicket.
Pathan's dismissal at the start of the 42nd over, however, hardly created a blip as Dhoni raised the tempo with a blistering innings, reaching his 35th half-century in the process.
Tendulkar, meanwhile, raised the highest individual score in one-day cricket, going past the previous mark of 194 jointly held by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar and Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry.
He reached the mark off only 140 deliveries with a couple of runs of Parnell, hitting 25 boundaries - the most by a batsman in a single innings - and three sixes along the way, before reaching his double century with a single off Charl Langeveldt in the final over.
South Africa, who hold the record for the world's highest chase in one-day internationals, began in poor fashion as they lost Gibbs (seven) in the third over and thereafter suffered blows regularly.
Gibbs attempted to paddle a delivery - pitched outside off - from Praveen Kumar to square leg, but only managed to drag the ball back onto his stumps.
Pinch-hitter Roelof van der Merwe (12) lasted only 12 deliveries, miscuing Shanthakumaran Sreesanth to Suresh Raina at cover, while Hashim Amla made 34 before he was Sreesanth's second victim.
Kallis had made 11 when he dragged a delivery from Ashish Nehra onto his stumps, Alviro Petersen was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja for 11 and JP Duminy was trapped in front for a first ball duck by Pathan.
The experienced pair of Mark Boucher and De Villiers then added 31 runs for the seventh wicket, but Pathan broke that stand by winning a lbw verdict against Boucher.

How far will he go???

How far will he go????????

Sachin Tendulkar, the man who is considered as the God of Cricket, has done a new record. For the first time ever in One Day history, he has scored a double century (200* of 146 balls).

It was incredible; 200 runs in an ODI innings is quite an achievement. Sachin has close to a hundred centuries in international cricket but he really needed this; something very special in an individual innings. He has got so many very good hundreds, but he needed that one knock that would create history. He doesn't have a triple hundred in Tests, he doesn't have the quickest fifty or hundred [in ODIs] or the fastest hundred in Tests. He has just got loads of very good Tests and ODI hundreds. So this is something he will especially cherish. He has that one individual innings that he can be really proud of. One of the changes that is seen with Tendulkar in the last couple of years and which was noticeable in this innings was that two years back he would set his mind on a hundred right at the start of the innings. What has changed in the last two years is that he goes out there to enjoy his batting and play his shots and then when he is in his nineties, he gets conscious of a hundred and then goes past it.
That is one change you have seen in him in the last two years and its no surprise that some of his big hundreds in the last one year or so: the 160 [163] against New Zealand and the 170 [175] against Australia and now a double hundred against South Africa. It was a terrific innings and there is no one more deserving of getting that record than Tendulkar himself.
Sachin Tendulkar is a player of Mumbai Indians in IPL.

Lalit Modi said IPL will not be moved out of India

IPL chairman Lalit Modi said IPL will not be moved out of India, despite security concerns raised in an independent report commissioned by the players' unions in England, Australia and South Africa that led to talk of shifting the tournament to another country, reports published Cricinfo.

"We are going to have the tournament in India. I can't see any reason why we should move it at this point in time. The media is reacting to every fringe group saying security is a problem," Modi told BBC Sport in reaction to the concerns.

The report, written by the England team's security advisor Reg Dickason, said there was a credible threat to the tournament from terrorist groups, raising questions over player safety apart from talk of a boycott by international cricketers. The Australian Cricketers' Association has decided to formulate a list of security demands for IPL organisers, following a meeting attended by most Australian players slated to play in the tournament.

"The process from here is for all players associated to meet with their player groups and for all of us to feed back the concerns raised from these meetings to the IPL," Paul Marsh, the ACA's chief executive said. "This will be coordinated through our peak body the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations. From here we will await a response from the IPL."

Heath Mills, the New Zealand Players' Association chief, also outlined security concerns. "It's one thing to have a security management plan, it's a much different thing to see it delivered and delivered well. It's quite complex when you consider the IPL is played across 12 cities, 12 police jurisdictions throughout India. There are some real concerns around that aspect," Mills said.

Modi, however, underplayed their concerns. "Nobody in the world can safeguard the safety of the players in any tournament. All we have to do is ensure we are putting on the best security," Modi said. "Safety is paramount to us and we are working with the national and state governments to ensure we have good security in place.

"At the end of the day we have to ensure the safety plans we put in place and the way we conduct them are absolutely top-notch."

Modi also said that he was not overly concerned by the possibility of overseas players withdrawing from the event. "The heavens aren't going to fall if that happens. This is an Indian tournament; we have the key Indian players and only a few international players."

"We have no worries at all. You have to understand that the market for us is India. "The tournament is a huge success - we have a huge credibility, we have the top 200 players in the world. It's not only dependent on foreign players, although they are part of it, Modi said.

IPL ban could open shield door to Hodge

MANY questions have arisen from the increasingly uncertain sporting environment on the sub-continent, including one from left-field with a local slant: if Brad Hodge isn't playing for Kolkata in next month's Indian Premier League, could he be batting at three for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield final?
Hodge chuckled at the suggestion yesterday, seeing it as a bridge he would cross if and when needed. He reaffirmed that he is no longer a first-class cricketer, and is well aware how his coming out of retirement in pursuit of one last title might be viewed - not least by the unfortunate Bushranger he would edge out of the team.
Yet if the IPL does not proceed due to the threat of terrorism, and cannot be relocated at short notice, Victoria could confront the absurd situation of playing for back-to-back shields with its games record-holder and highest runscorer watching from the stands.
''I guess I retired for a reason - because of commitments like the IPL and the commitment I've got to play Twenty20 in England, and those were taking me away from my family,'' Hodge said yesterday.
''If I wasn't away from my family for seven weeks then I would consider it, but I wouldn't want to put anyone out of place. The travelling's the reason I gave four-day cricket away. I'd only do it if Victoria asked me to, put it that way.''
The Vics were understandably coy about flying kites yesterday, cricket operations manager Shaun Graf saying there was no point dealing in hypotheticals until the IPL was definitely in jeopardy. He admitted it would present ''a unique situation'' for team management to digest.
''At this point in time he's retired, just like (Dirk) Nannes is retired from four-day cricket, and that's how we've got to view it,'' Graf said. ''But in cricket these days, it's changing so rapidly, anything can happen.''
Hodge cannot be in Sydney this morning for the meeting with Australian Cricketer's Association chief executive Paul Marsh, at which IPL-contracted players will learn the contents of a report from security consultant Reg Dickason. But like all of the 22 Australians who have signed for the Twenty20 tournament, Hodge is eagerly awaiting advice on what happens next.
The freelance nature of the IPL presents cricketers with the conundrum of having to tackle decisions that would normally be made for them. Many would doubtless be relieved to see the tournament moved elsewhere - such as South Africa, which hosted it last year in the wake of bombings in Mumbai.
But with IPL boss Lalit Modi and the international players association at loggerheads, and only 16 days left before Hodge's Kolkata Knight Riders are due to open the tournament against Adam Gilchrist's Deccan Chargers, a protracted game of ''who blinks first'' could be disastrous.
Meanwhile, Victoria rolls on towards another final. Yesterday, as the Bushrangers' top order contended with Queensland's seam bowlers and a typically tricky first-day Gabba wicket, Hodge was picking up son Jesse from kindergarten, then strolling home to join wife Megan and daughter Sophie for lunch.
That the star Victorian batsman of his era could yet be there should his beloved state, as expected, reach the first-class decider from March 17-21 is a long-shot.
But, in cricket, nothing is impossible.

Newzealand Players advised to skip the IPL

New Zealand involvement in the Indian Premier League has been thrown into serious doubt.
The Herald understands that within the next 24 hours, the players' associations of New Zealand, Australia, England and South Africa will strongly recommend their players pull out of the IPL, due to start in Mumbai on March 12.
While all the players will be able to make their own decisions, the recommendation of the players' associations will be to miss the tournament based on a report by independent security adviser Reg Dickason, which states that a terrorism threat against the IPL is real and "credible".
The report also casts doubt on the ability of the local authorities to deliver security management plans.
NZ Cricket players' association manager Heath Mills would not confirm his organisation's position yesterday but said he had talked to the five players involved - Brendon McCullum, Shane Bond, Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori and Ross Taylor - to brief them on the report.
He said a statement was likely within the next 24 hours as to the positions of the players' associations and that it would be a united front.
Stephen Fleming also has a coaching role with Chennai, Scott Styris is contracted by Deccan Chargers but did not make their 23-man squad this year, and Jesse Ryder and Kyle Mills have been invalided out of the tournament.
New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan said he had digested the contents of the Dickason report but the national boards were limited in what they could tell their players.
NZC will likely come under massive pressure from IPL commissioner Lalit Modi and the BCCI, Indian cricket's governing body, to persuade the players to travel.
"I don't quite know how we would do that," Vaughan said. "We stand a little bit aside from this as it's officially a domestic competition and our players are independent contractors ... the [national] boards, per se, don't have a say in this."
Vaughan fought hard to increase the numbers of New Zealanders playing in the IPL, a number that could decrease if there were mass pull-outs, with the existing three-year contracts due to end after this tournament with no guarantee of renewal.
Asked whether he would be disappointed if the players' associations recommended a hard line to their constituents, Vaughan paused before saying:
"I think it would be very disappointing if the IPL did not take place in India this year. If that was to happen, it would not be a good thing for world cricket."
While Hockey New Zealand yesterday gave the all-clear for the Black Sticks to travel to Delhi for the World Cup, the situation is vastly different.
The World Cup is being played at one venue in Delhi, with all the teams staying at one hotel close to the playing venue that will be in virtual lock-down mode.
The IPL is due to be played at 12 venues across India, meaning multiple airline routes, multiple airports, multiple hotels and multiple police jurisdictions.
Last year's IPL was shifted at late notice to South Africa.

Team Review- Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore, like Deccan Chargers, had ended up at the bottom of the table in the inaugural edition of IPL. Both teams ended up meeting in the final of IPL 2009 in South Africa. Anil Kumble-led RCB with great heart, but was unable to win the title. Kumble's most impressive virtues as a cricketer - grit and determination - came to the fore in South Africa. The side lost four of their first five matches in IPL 2009, but made a startling comeback to make it to the semi-finals.
The team qualified for the CLT20 but could not qualify for the knock-out stage. The team has undergone a sea-change in terms of personnel and support staff from Season 2008 with new coach Ray Jennings making a huge impact. Regular captain Kevin Pietersen's participation is still debatable owing to an extended injury break. Their only buy at the 2010 auction was Englishman Eoin Morgan, but they also have in their ranks India's under-19 captain Ashok Menaria while Nathan Bracken has been bought out.

Team Review- Deccan chargers

The reigning title-holders of the second edition of the IPL, Deccan Chargers had a fairytale second season. Plagued by poor performances, the team was placed at the bottom of the table at the end of IPL’s first season. But they scripted an incredible turnaround in the second edition in South Africa, claiming the title. Much credit for Deccan Chargers’ rags to riches story goes to their captain Adam Gilchrist who was instrumental in Australia's three ICC World Cup wins.
His compatriot Darren Lehmann joined the team as coach for the IPL’s second edition. The side has a good balance in terms of their pace attack led by the fiery Fidel Edwards and the steady RP Singh. In the Champions League Twenty20, however, Deccan choked in the final over in both their games, so now comes the big chance to redeem themselves at home.

Can the domestic players do it?

Successful Ranji Trophy season could very well be the foundation on which many domestic stars build their international career.

A number of domestic Ranji players have found a place in the final squads of the IPL franchises for the 2010 season. And rather fortuitously for players, several spots are up for grabs in the Indian national team, what with its ranks being depleted owing to injuries to senior players.

Zaheer Khan, the fulcrum of the Indian pace attack, has been performing well, but there is an opening for a supporting role. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Karnataka pacer A Mithun was recently picked for the Test squad.

There is another candidate who hopes to make it to the national squad on the back of a strong Ranji season - Love Ablish. The son of a shoe merchant, he plays for Punjab in the domestic circuit and was the third highest wicket-taker in Ranji Super League this year. The medium-pacer took 36 wickets at an average of 23.88. He would be hoping that sharing the nets for Kings XI Punjab with Australian pacer Brett Lee, Indian swing expert Irfan Pathan and South African Yusuf Abdulla would help improve his bowling and attract the Indian selectors to pick him for the T20 World Cup.

The Saurashtra opener Chirag Pathak, who hit a brisk century in the Duleep final, has been drafted in by Kolkata Knight Riders. Chirag had a great Ranji season having scored 601 runs from six matches. This southpaw would be rubbing his hands with excitement at the prospect of learning from two of this generation’s greatest left-handed openers, Sourav Ganguly and Chris Gayle.

Also named in the KKR squad were reliable middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and Tamil Nadu’s hard-hitting opener Ganapathi Vignesh.

Royal Challengers’ S Sriram, who has turned out in Indian colours, would also be hoping to make enough of an impression during IPL 2010 to be back in the national squad.

Chennai Super Kings have signed up C Ganapathy, who was one of the Ranji Trophy's leading all-rounders this season. The Tamil Nadu seamer caught the eye of selectors when he took a five-wicket haul in the Duleep Trophy final. His batting prowess was on display during the Ranji Trophy Super League – he scored 543 runs at an average of 77.57. This all-round ability should stand him in good stead and increase his chances of making the playing XI.

The domestic cricketers in IPL’s ranks would be hoping to make the most of the chance to play with, and learn from, the international stars. We now have to wait and watch if IPL 2010 would be the year they graduate from the domestic level and make a mark on the big stage.

IPL-The new craze of youngstars

IPL T20 has given a new meaning to cricket. Cricket started with test matches and went till one day and now, its brand new format is twenty20. With the victory in Twenty20 World Cup Cricket Tournament in South Africa, this format has become India’s beloved game. After seeing so much praise, BCCI has tried and given it a new dimension in India with IPL T20.
Indian premiere league proved itself last year. In order to start this idea BBCI has taken the support from cricket boards of various countries, so that they allow their players to play in the IPL Cricket League. They are being paid heavy sums for doing so.
Auctions of the players and the state teams have attracted many big business houses, bollywood stars and millionaires from all around the world. These big names that are paying certainly do make a difference in the game.
In India, people consider cricket as a religion than just a sport. This passion for the game has written the success story of this format and league. This league has not given only cricket but lots of entertainment also through Bollywood stars, cheerleaders, music, etc.
In this league there are eight teams representing various regions of India and these teams are combined with international cricket stars and domestic players. They play matches in the twenty20 format against each other. Every team will be playing two matches against another team and the four highest winners will be playing two semifinals. The semifinal winners will then play the finale of the game. This gives the lot of action to the cricket lovers all around the world.
IPL T20 is a league which gives a chance to the domestic players to improve their game and learn from their seniors. In this, every team has to play only 20overs. This is shortest form of cricket which has given tallest of height to cricket.

IPL- Giant event of the world

By its acquisition of most players in the world of cricket, IPL has managed to move everything in its way like a thunder rumbling across. The attention that the IPL Cricket league is receiving has belittled the meagre reputation that the ICL managed to secure some time back and IPL has already done what it was conceived for.
The formation of the IPL cricket league is certainly not the result or aftermath of the Indian win over the Twenty20 World Cup which was initially termed as “a waste of time” by high officials in BCCI. It is due to the formation of the Indian Cricket League by some former Indian cricket players who wanted to move the monopoly of BCCI over Indian cricket that the concept of the IPL came around.
Taking inspiration from English Premier League, BCCI started the idea of Indian Premier League where the support of cricket boards of various countries has been sought. players from different countries have been allowed to play in the IPL Cricket League and they are being paid heavy sums for doing so.
Amounts so large are involved in both these ventures that using the word “enormous” will be underestimating them. Auctions of the players and the state teams in the IPL have attracted big business houses, Bollywood actors, millionaires from all over the world. It is the big names that are paying that have made all the difference in the IPL.
Cricket is considered to be more like a religion in India than just a sport. People have their passion with this game and passion is one virtue where everything else takes a backseat. With matches in this league to start in April 2008, everybody has their fingers crossed and is hoping for the great entertainment.

IPL- The Stair of wealth for BCCI

The IPL 2010 has not yet started but all the matches schedule in India, it can be said that it is going to be a huge success. It’s like a Golden Goose for BCCI. It brought up a lot of money into their Treasure.
To start with ESD has bagged the theatrical rights of the Indian Premier League matches for the next 10 years which cost them Rs 330 crore.
Initially the craze started when the top Industrialists like Mukesh Ambani and Celebrities like Shah Rukh khan participated in the auction and successfully won the bids for owning the franchises in the Indian Premier League. The highest amount in this auction was for the Mumbai team. This team was successfully bid for an astonishing amount of $111.9 million by Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani. The next highest was for the Bangalore team which was successfully bid for $111.6 million by the liquor king Vijay Malaya.
Then the craze got stimulated during the auction conducted for the players. All theIndian Premier League teams participated in this auction. The highest amount in this bid was $1.5 million for Indian Team captain MS Dhoni.
The TV rights for the Indian premier League were gone for an astonishing amount of $1 billion. These rights were successfully bid by the Sony and World Sport group for the next ten years.
The Umpiring rights for the Indian premier League were gone for $106 million. These rights were bought by the Kingfisher Airlines group. The Kingfisher people will be having their brand mark on the umpire costumes and also on the third umpire decision.
BCCI grabbed all the above money. They are using this money in a right way. The total prize money for the Indian Premier League is Rs. 12 crore. The winner in the final will get Rs.4.8 crore and the runner up will get Rs.2.8 crore. The teams which got till semifinals will get 1.2 crore.
This huge amount of money was never seen in the history of cricket. The prize money announced was three times the prize money of a cricket world cup. This is the main reason why the cricketers from all around the world are trying to make their place in the Indian Premier League.

Shiv Sena Warning- Gilchrist may quit

Deccan Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist is uncertain about participating in the IPL 2010 edition if security experts deem the country unsafe after threats from Maharashtra based Shiv Sena to not allow Australian players to play in India over attacks on Indian students in Melbourne and other parts of the country.

The welfare of Australia’s elite cricketers has become a concern after Shiv Sena supremo warned on Wednesday that activists planned to disrupt matches in the Indian city of Mumbai because of attacks on Indians living in Australia.

Gilchrist is one of the Australians, including captain Ricky Ponting and former stars Mathew Hayden and Andrew Symonds, set to appear in the IPL 3, which begins on March 12.

The former wicketkeeper is keen to return for defending champions Deccan Chargers, but he will adopt a wait-and-see approach as Australian cricket authorities assess the security threat on the sub-continent, the Daily Telegraph reports.

“Adam is aware of the situation and he is always very mindful of the security concerns in India. Adam was looking to play in this year’s tournament but it is always a worry when statements like that (made by Shiv Sena) are being made,” his manager Stephen Atkinson said.

“Ultimately, he will be guided by the views of Cricket Australia and security experts. He is intending to go, but any final decision is subject to travel and security advice by Cricket Australia and the ACA (Australian Cricketers Association),” he added.

Meanwhile, off-spinner Jason Krejza says Shiv Sena’s threats are unlikely to stop him traveling to India.

Krejza is one of 11 Australians planning to make their debut in the 2010 Twenty20 tournament after entering his name in the IPL 2010 Auction.

IPL in Theaters

Indian Premier League ( IPL 2010 ) will no more be a nightmare for theater owners. Multiplex owners has had no movie takers in the past during the last 2 IPL seasons. But not anymore – viewers will be able to watch IPL 2010 cinema halls next year.

Cinemax Cinemas is the first multiplex chain to sign up with UFO Movies who are technical partners of Entertainment and Sports Direct (ESD) for 34 locations. Mr Sanjay Gaikwad, CEO of UFO Movies said that there may be many more multiplex signing up in the next few days and multiplexes may also have live bands and contests during the 45 days of IPL.

A weekend ticket at a blockbuster in a multiplex cost between Rs. 280 to 380 and the price of IPL match in a multiplex will be the same said Devang Sampat, senior vice president, Cinemax Cinemas.

So Shahrukh Khan lovers will get to watch MS Dhoni on big screen during the exciting season 3 of IPL.

Deccan Chargers has no home ground in IPL 2010

The IPL have decided to move all of the Deccan Chargers IPL games out of Hyderabad due to the ongoing political unrest in the Telangana region.

The state as seen political unrest throughout the last few months and the Chargers opening game against the Kolkata Knight Riders had already been moved to Mumbai.

"It is confirmed that all the matches will be shifted out from there," Sundar Raman, COO of the Indian Premier League told the Times of India.

The decision to move all of the Chargers games follows the IPL's decision to move the opening game of IPL 3.0 from Hyderabad because of the security fears.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was concerned about the security risk with so many celebrities expected at the game.

"We will have the gala dinner and the opening ceremony along with the first match. There will be guests from all over and we can't take a chance with that," he said.

IPL announce squad details for IPL 2010

The IPL have released details of the initial playing squads for the eight franchises which will take part in this years Indian Premier League which starts in March.

According to the IPL regulations, each franchise has selected a playing squad of up to 23 players from its list of registered players. The regulations allow franchises to bring registered players into the 23 man squad at any time, as long as they give a 48 hours notice prior to a match.

As a result, some IPL franchisees have chosen not to name their international players with FTP commitments in the initial playing squad, prime examples of which are players like Rajasthan Royals' Shane Watson and Kolkata Knight Riders new pacer Shane Bond.

When these players do become available, their respective franchises will be able to add them to the playing squad by replacing players currently listed in the squad.

In addition to the players taken in last month's auction, the IPL franchises have signed a number of Indian cricketers who played in the rebel Indian Cricket League who have benefited from the BCCI amnesty.

The players joining the IPL from the ICL include Reetinder Singh Sodhi, S Sriram, Hemang Badani, Rohan Gavaskar, Ambati Rayudu and Shalabh Srivastava.

Two new teams will be introduced in March

The winning bids for the two new IPL franchises which will join the league in 2011 will be announced on Monday, March 8th just before the start of IPL 3.0.

The announcement was made by IPL commissioner Lalit Modi on Twitter, he also revealed that the cities in contention to host franchises were Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kanpur, Dharamsala, Indore, Cuttack, Gwalior and Visakapatnam.

Rajkot, Pune, Vadodara and Kochi are also locations the IPL would consider but the bids would be dependent on the construction of new cricket stadiums.

"Tenders can be collected from the Board of Control for Cricket in India office or the IPL office from February 21," Modi said. "The bids will be opened on March 8 in Mumbai."

"Details of the bidding process for two new teams will be in the tender document" he added.

The base rate for the new franchises have been at $215 million but the high price hasn't put of bidders with Modi announcing a few weeks ago that he has received over 40 requests from interested parties.

Three wicketkeeper captain in IPL 2010

Indian Premier League 2010 will see three wicketkeepers lead their teams on the field; Adam Gilchrist for the Deccan Chargers, MS Dhoni for the Chennai Super Kings and Kumar Sangakkara for Kings XI Punjab.

Wicketkeepers form an integral part of teams. However inexperienced, they hold a very critical position in the line-up given they are most involved with the game.

A wicketkeeper is best placed to watch all the action – from as close as possible. Be it having a close look at the pitch, observing a batsman’s body language, or helping bowlers identify key areas on the pitch, glovesmen can offer valuable assistance to the bowlers.

A wicketkeeper could also come in handy in helping set fields; in these days of competitive cricket, every run saved is of vital importance. Wicketkeepers can help position fielders correctly, so the chances of batsmen finding the gap are reduced.

For a captain to be successful, he needs two important things – apart from a good team that is. A captain needs to have a keen eye and a sound head, and the three wicketkeeper-captains in the IPL have proven track records at the international level.

Adam Gilchrist, the best wicketkeeper-batsman of our times, led Australia in six Test matches and 17 ODIs with a 74% overall success record. MS Dhoni had a charmed record as Test captain until recently and has an enviable record in ODIs.

Though Sangakkara has only been on the job in the last year, he has shown he has what it takes to be a successful captain.

All three players are keen students of the game, smart thinkers and play the game in the right spirit. They are also the kind of players who believe in leading by example and back their players.

As ODI captain, Gilchrist averages 34.63, Dhoni averages 59.17, while Sangakkara averages 39.16.

In a format like Twenty20, and especially in IPL where players from around the globe share dressing room space, there could be a flood of thoughts from various quarters.

Dhoni, Gilchrist and Sangakkara each have a steady head on their shoulders and are measured in their decision-making.

Good captains don’t react to circumstances immediately, but play their cards at appropriate times. And Dhoni, Gilchrist and Sangakkara have the skill to call the right cards at the right time.
